Newcastle Crit - Round Three of the HSBC UK | National Circuit Series

Back to British Cycling action on July 10th, with a fast and furious, and seriously technical circuit at the heart of the city of Newcastle, broadcast live online. Starting and finishing at Grey’s Monument, the 930m course featured tight turns, two 90 degree bends on to a narrow cobbled sector, and an uphill draggy finish.

It was kamikaze from the start, with the peloton blowing to bits within the opening laps, and the 52 starters spread out around the course. Despite an early attack from Jake Scott and Ryan Christensen it was Matt Bostock and local lad Thomas Mein who broke clear. A strong cyclocross rider and just 20 years old, Mein set the pace and rhythm for much of the race, with Bostock on his wheel. Despite being able to ride his own rhythm and lines and vociferous support from fans, Newcastle-born Mein didn’t have enough at the line, as two-times winner Bostock rolled him at the line and made it a hat-trick of victories, to extend his lead in the overall standings for Canyon dHb P/b Bloor Homes.
